Guide to Post-Dental Implant Recovery

Dental implants are a leading solution for tooth loss for a number of reasons. When the procedure is completed by an experienced periodontist in Whitby, it offers a long-lasting option that replicates the feel and function of natural teeth so you can be confident with your smile. Compared to other options like bridges and dentures, dental implants are far more comfortable and durable, improving quality of life. For most patients looking to enhance their smile, dental implants require a simple procedure that can make a world of difference. If you or a loved one are struggling with missing teeth, reach out to The Perio Centre and Dr. Adam Ohayon, a trusted dentist serving Whitby, Oshawa, and the surrounding areas.

Read on for more insight into the dental implant procedure and recovery process.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are to address tooth loss. When patients have lost a tooth or are likely to lose a primary tooth for any number of reasons, be that it was knocked out or advanced periodontal disease, implants provide an opportunity to restore the functionality of that tooth. At The Perio Centre, our implants are surgical-grade titanium rods. The rods are skillfully implanted into the gum and jaw bone to replace the missing tooth root. Once healed, the dental implant is topped with a high-quality dental crown, which acts as the recognizable white part of the tooth and sits on top of the gums. Our team at The Perio Centre is a leading provider of dental implant procedures throughout Durham Region for our custom approach and advanced technology.
Steps for Successful Post-Dental Implant Recovery

Once your dental implant procedure is complete, your periodontist in Whitby will provide specific instructions to guide you on your post-op care requirements. We’ll also schedule a follow-up appointment with you at The Perio Centre so our team of experts can assess the healing and progress.
Manage Swelling or Discomfort

It’s not usual for you to experience some level of swelling or discomfort after a dental or periodontal procedure. The pain will often subside within a few hours or days following the implantation. Over-the-counter medications and painkillers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help manage swelling and any pain. Your periodontist may also prescribe you a painkiller or antibiotic if required. It’s essential to stay away from Aspirin or other blood-thinning medications for at least a week to enable the best healing unless otherwise directed. If you’re concerned about persistent pain or swelling, contact The Peio Centre; our team will guide you.
Avoid Smoking & Alcohol

Smoking can inhibit the body’s natural healing processes, increasing the risk of infection and reducing the blood clotting capabilities, which can delay healing. Alcohol also interferes with your ability to recover quickly and should be avoided if you’ve also been prescribed certain medications such as acetaminophen and antibiotics.

Soft Foods

For some, dental implant surgery can cause tender gums, making eating many hard, sharp, or bony foods more challenging. To mitigate pain and to avoid compromising the implantation site, it’s recommended that you only consume soft foods in the first few days following the procedure. You can return to all the foods you know and love once the area is completely healed.
A Consistent Oral Routine

For the best recovery and outlook with your new and improved smile, proper, regimented, and consistent oral hygiene is essential. While you don’t need to aggressively brush or floss the area right after your dental implant procedure, it’s helpful to rinse your mouth with salt water solutions and brush the surrounding teeth with a soft bristle toothbrush. After your dental implants have healed, you can continue with a standard dental routine that prioritizes flossing and brushing at least twice a day to protect the future of your smile.
